The missing copper plating is called split copper plating, and the bubbly appearance is trapped zinc dust between the copper plating and the zinc core. Not an error. John1

Your right, it is PMDZinc dust, a common occurrence, especially on the earlier year zincoins. As John1 stated, the missing copper is split plating caused by Die Deterioration.

I read that split copper plating has to do with MD not DDD. Maybe coop can elaborate? John1

I can't actually see any "split plate" zinc in these images.

Why do think this is a DDO?

Isn't it doubled on the date and mint mark? I have googled/read and watched Youtube about double dies, and if it isn't obvious, I have a heck of a time seeing it, so I'm missing something. Obviously I'm a newbie...but have spent an enormous amount of time trying to educate myself...and distinguish what websites/listings for sale are bogus or for real. So 2 questions - why isn't this a doubling error i watch couch collectibles and blue ridge silverhound - in your opinion these have good info? Thanks so much - sorry for the long post

I'm not sure where you came up with "zinc dust". If dust particles were responsible for the bumps, the copper plating would show this before the strike. But the blisters only develop after the strike, presumably immediately after the pressure of the strike is eased.

to the CCF. Don't know who couch collectable or blue ridge silver hound is, but if they are calling this DD then you need to stop watching them. There is a lot of experience on this site. Use the search tab above, sometimes it takes a while to learn what's what, stick around you'll get there.

Thanks so much - sorry for the long post"The doubling you see on the date is DDD [not to be confused with DDO] from an older die. The older die basically "pushes a little wave" of metal over to the side [for lack of a better explanation]. The MM also shows DDD with some likely zinc rot. As a side note, doubling is not considered an error it is a variety. I don't watch those YouTube channels so cannot comment. Another good source of info for Lincoln cents is at http://www.lincolncentforum.com Probably good to learn what distinguishes one class of doubling from another [at least eight types]. I applaud you for educating yourself as so many "newbies" don't seem to bother. No question is dumb if asked in earnest. Good luck. The site below is a good source for diedeteriorationdoubling http://www.lincolncentforum.com/die...oubling-ddd/

There is more misinformation on UTube than useful information, for that reason we do not recommend using UTube. There is a wealth of fantastic information here within the past pages on CCF ( use the search box atop every page here, upper left side). The split plating can be seen starting on the date of the posted coin.

Mike, A lot of us always think it is zinc dust, would you please go into more detail on this subject? If dust is not the cause for the texture, what causes it? John1
