Hi, so I'm new. And hot for a cool find. But that also means I think everything is rare and worth a million bucks. lol

I'm trying to train my eye and be more selective. But I've got two examples of the same thing. The background is pink for one example and neutral for the other to sort of keep them distinguishable. To me and the naked eye, it's a "crack" and the zinc layer below has some of oxidized blue. Both excellent condition coins. But please let me know if they are good funds or not. I almost went cross eyed trying to focus my small microscope. Thanks y'all!!

Copper plated zinc cents are prone to defective plating issues. Go to error-ref.com and search for "plating."

Some help here for making "finds."

Learning the hobby backwards:
Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don't learn the coin hobby backwards.

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage or useless Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, etc.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.

So I've been watching videos, and on varietyvista and all over Reddit. Which by the way is the least helpful so far. I get lost in vista because even though I know the difference between DDO, DDR Machine Doubling, the different variations to each I'm still grasping.

I've separated a jar of Pennie's that belonged to my father in law. I've got everything between 1918 and 1992- currently I've got them by decade. And I'm sort of grabbing the best conditions first.

These 92's I know to look for Wam/Cam, doubling and centering. I've got enough to last me a year, I think.

I'll check out your other suggestions. Thank you.

Are plating issues a good thing with other errors?

Hard to say anything better than what Earle42 has said. If collecting coins is appealing to you, take the time to learn the terms and look through lots and lots of coins. Don't be afraid to ask us questions, just realise not every coin is an error coin. Watch a video on how coins are produced, and I said, look through a lot of coins. Bonne chance!

So far, my opinion is there are are too many error coins to be so collectible. lol

And the snub from those at local shops or who haven't been so kind in a reply elsewhere; is my fuel. Realistically, I understand millions of needles in billions of haystacks. I plan to keep what I find interesting and makes me smile. If, I can find something special along the way to show off to those unhelpful not-so-nice folks later on, bonus for me!

Everyone starts somewhere. So. Here I go. :)

Fact is, most so-called "error" coins on this forum are not errors at all. True errors are scarce and very collectible.

I am late this day to answers.

First it is not an floating roof. To be must miss the both sides complete without of traces. Second ; The blue show the start of Zinc oxidation, not so good for the coin because it is no-reversible.

Make me smile. Please acknowledge that not all dealers are experts. And if you find an such snub who pretend been just take the moments on your advantage.

Second part it is you post Saturday, and not everybody come here. If you has coins from 1918 almost all coins till 1992 is something good, very good. Put first in year collection and then decide what you will like to specialize. DD's is it a hard specialty. Start with errors and major design varieties.

Other point is ERROR vs VARIETY. Errors come from the minting process and varieties come from the Dies (mean design) only few come from the Dies are errors.

Good Luck, hope a sunny day will come.

Thank you! You gave me new advice and answered my question too. Which doesn't seem to be a popular option so far. let me ask about the floating roof. What "sides" should be missing? Or maybe point me in the direction of a good example of one somewhere? Maybe too, you'd like to shout out one or two examples I might try and find in my jar?

Thanks again!

Ok. Here you has two example of floating roof. I mention that this variety is due to extra-polishing the die and those varieties are know for the 1960 till 1970. In general the FG is very weak or missing complete. The price is about 1 max 5$ direct proportional with the grade of the coin. Some cases more. When I say 1 to 5$ is the extra price over the value of the coin on the grade has.

to CCF. First thing, errors and varieties are two different things. Also, there are many types of doubling to learn, here is a link https://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles...Doubling.htm

These are just over polishing on the die. They are a die event. When the die was fresh everything was there. After a few polishings the devices get removed from the die. Happens on Many things from The Missing 'D' on 1922, 3 legged Buffalo's, 2 feathers Buffalo, Missing initials, The floating roofs, Peg leg Ikes, and others. Give it a name and people go for it. They are just die polishing events. People making the most on these are the grading companies. To me, I'd rather have a Fresher die state, than an over polished one. But that is just me.
