Hi, guys,

I'm curious what TPG's do to preserve/tidy up coins before they slab them. I would assume they do things that are meant to preserve the coins in their present condition, such as remove skin oils, etc., that could damage the surface over time, right?

Anybody know?

Thanks in advance!
Lisa

They do not do anything before slabbing coins unless you request conservation. This is why I do a quick acetone or xylene bath before I send off for grading, especially with a freshly purchased coin. No telling how the coin the handled prior. This will aid in killing potentially harmful organic substances on the surface, such as pvc or oils.

Thanks. The reason I wondered is I just got a slabbed coin that is quite attractively toned, but it seems to me there's a slight haze on parts of the obverse—the mint luster still shines through but it seems duller than it ought to be given the overall condition. I've seen similar coins brighten up after an acetone bath, and if it weren't slabbed I'd be giving it that treatment.

Anyway, since it is slabbed, I guess I have two options—just leave it be, or consider sending it to NGC and asking them to conserve and reholder it. Depending on the price it might be worth it.
