Hi all,

I'm having trouble with this one...some areas on the obverse look doubled to me, others look like VLDS, while the reverse looks like Machine Doubling, although the 'M' in Monticello appears like possible doubling to me. I reviewed the various varieties online but I didn't think die doubling could occur on one side of the coin while the other side has Machine Doubling. So I'm thinking everything is VLDS?

I'd appreciate your thoughts...

*Sorry for the photo bombs, I tried to be as concise as possible :/

I would say Die Deterioration. I am not the expert though.

mostly Die Deterioration with a bit of Machine Doubling, the latter can occur regardless of the dies being old, new or doubled becuase it happens as the die is lifting off the coin

Die wear and Machine Doubling, but not a doubled die. On the areas you are looking at, are the areas where you see die wear and Machine Doubling. Look at the centers of the devices. Not on the outside edges of the devices.
Here is an example of a proof nickel with a DDR. A lot of images, but note where you see the spread on a nickel DDO-DDR examples:

I did not see the replies to this post, my apologies...thank you for clarifying, and Coop, I really appreciate the link to the 'What to Look For' thread, hugely helpful.

So many times on the Variety Vista site, New Ones will miss that information on the description. So they match it up their coin to the normal images and think, "I have that die on most of the devices." But the description information is the variety, the other images are normal images with slight hub doubling or use for markers on to match up to determine die state/stage. In order to be that die number all the hub doubling must match up. (there are times when the class 2 doubled dies will loose the spread lines because die wear on the outside edges of the devices. But on other devices in the center areas, it will show the hub doubling as the die wear doesn't affect that area yet.
