what do you think? Does the scratch make it worthless? Is it overly cleaned?

I wouldn't say worthless, but I would say worth less. The cleaning is a killer for me

AU details but the hairlines on the obverse (from an old cleaning) really hurt it.

A "plus" is that the coin is starting to re-tone nicely!

Although it is still very pretty, the coin has lost most of its numismatic value. Both the scratch and the cleaning are responsible and neither would be over-looked by a TPG, but the cleaning is worse.

When you ask if it is "overly cleaned", it's important to understand that ANY cleaning that leaves visible traces reduces that value of your coins considerably. Never clean coins unless you understand the risk of doing so. (And yes, even acetone can ruin a coin.)

AU Details scratched and cleaned. Given that the coin is scratched and cleaned it still has some eye appeal. I would put the value in the $150 range. The date can easily be found in lower grades in original condition for a lot less.

OP here.

I would guess I paid about 20% of AU55 uncleaned prices for it.

And a lot of the AU55s or so don't really have much eye appeal.

It has eye appeal to me.
