I've seen these a lot on late 60's/early 70s cents. I had Wexler look at one and he said it is die abrasion, so just a form Die Deterioration Doubling.

Very interesting and great closeups.
Certainly looks like there is an extra column to the left of column #7 (above the statue) as well as an extra ceiling.

I like it.

EDIT:

... he said it is die abrasion

Hmmm, well I'll be.

I didn't expect die abrasion as sharp as the raised vertical line is?
There even appears to be a secondary statue head and arm to the SW as well in these images.

I don't believe most variety people agree with the term 'abrasion doubling' anymore, but yeah that's what Wexler calls it (scroll down to the 1971 cent example here: http://www.doubleddie.com/144864.html )

Error-ref says the explanation of this as die abrasion is a myth: http://www.error-ref.com/abrasion-doubling/

I do think 'abrasion doubling' is likely a misnomer for this doubling on the 1969-1972 cents. You don't see any other signs of abrasion on some examples (scratches/thinning of devices) and they're usually in later die states. Just an unusual form of Die Deterioration.

To me, it just looks like a heavy handed mint worker. Wonder what they were they trying to covering up? I know some of the only DDR's for the D and S mints that year were in bay 6.
