This one is right on the edge I think. I originally had it at ms65. Checking it in natural light I'm second guessing myself. Seems super clean except for a couple marks on the shield that I can't see without magnification, strike looks good (not great maybe), luster is good (not great). Seems right on the edge.

What do you all think?

i think its between 62 and 63. for me this is one of the more challenging series to grade and probably why I never collected them other than pulling the 64's from circulation. if you are going to seriously put a set together imo you need to dig into grading them deeper. also the glare on the photos is not helping so it might lean closer to the MS63

just a tip...you cannot pull a 65 if the luster is broken. for me the highest I grade one like that would be 64 and I go down from there.

That is a great tip! You just downgraded all my Kennedy's by 3 points! lol!
I definitely will not be starting to upgrade halves anytime soon. I'll stick to working on the quarters, nickels, and dimes. My eye is getting closer with those, although I'm still high on them too. Next will be cents. Lots of info I need to pick up with them.

I'm thinking MS60-61. A fair number of rim ticks, light scratches across the eagle's breast shield. Strike appears soft. Lighting used for photos isn't optimum so it's difficult to make a better assessment.

@Captain. I collect the halves and quarters. The halves are one of the most difficult to have in high grades. For 1981P took me more then 15 years to have an MS67. Those clad series are characterized by weaker strikes, which will downgrade. Have an 1981P in over 66 it is a really challenge. The trick for grading those it is not the reverse it is the observe and their it is the big game. The reverse main for grading are the feathers main (central upper the shield) and the feathers of the tile. Other think it is the luster in almost of the cases are different. The reverse in general better then the observe, and here the game start, to have same luster uniform. the quarters are the same in some how and much more design varieties which it is a challenge also.

Good LUCK.

Far from a gem. I'd say 63 tops.

Thanx everyone! I have gone back through my mint sets and dropped everything by at least 3 points, most more. I'd say out of all my Kennedys from mint sets 70-98 I have a couple low choice coins now. Everything else is ms62 and below. Grading these is going to take some work on my part.

I suspect this one looks better in hand, maybe MS-64
