While visiting my uncle, after telling him about my newfound obsession with coins, his girlfriend comes out the back with a box of coins. While she had some older coins, most were '60's through '90's, but in amongst all of em was this shiny guy. Pics don't do it much justice, background is almost mirror like, with all the raised elements more frosty.

Yes it's an Impaired proof because of the S mint mark . Impaired because it was circulated and mishandled .

Even though it's not in the best of shape, nice coin to come across.

No that is not true, but this one is. I like to save impaired proofs in 2x2s to prevent further damage.

On my knowledge in 1980 S was release only proof. And this coin like already mentioned it is proof release by someone from set on the circulation.

Agreed! Finding proofs in the wild is always fun!

Starting in 1971, yes. San Francisco minted nickels for circulation many times before then.

To my way of thinking, impaired proofs are all keepers despite having drastically impaired value.

For the health of the hobby I always spend impaired proofs to help attract others to this madness we have.

After all it's only worth 0.05c minus shipping, gas, my time.
