Hi, I am new to the world of collecting coins. My Dad left me part of his collection and I am working on cataloging what I have. I came across this 1976 uncirculated penny which appears to have a full fingerprint. The penny is still in the original packaging which contains the penny, nickel, dime, quarter & half dollar. Would anyone have information on finger printing coinage? This intrigues me.

to the CCF A fingerprint is considered damage on a coin. It is probably due to poor handling from whomever did the packaging.

Ouch. Yes, that's damage. Nice fingerprint capture, however.

Hmm , to tell you the truth that doesn't look like a finger print to me unless it's from the jolly green giant , or the mint worker didn't know not to touch uncirculated coins with bare fingers .

. Maybe a thumb print? It is now considered PMD. John1

Looks like a thumb print to me too - a full print, maybe the mint worker intentionally added that impression by rolling his thumb all over that coin before packaging.

Or... they picked it up off of the floor and threw it back into the process.

The only place could be pick up is the blanc cutting. The rest, common. In 1976 the workers on the mint put manually the coins for packaging. This happened till 1985-1986. Manny coins in cello has the fingers print. I do not know if the Mint will disclose the identity of the workers by fingerprint. Will be a nice gift to him/her or the family's.

Quote: I do not know if the Mint will disclose the identity of the workers by fingerprint. As a former fingerprint examiner, this particular print would be classified as a six-count loop.
