This is another one from the collection I'm evaluating. I'm not the best photographer & the GSA plastic didn't help. Hopefully the pictures are good enough for grading. How badly do the black (carbon?) spots affect it?

This one might be technically gem, but the pictures aren't sharp enough to say definitively. The black oxidation spots throughout both sides of the coin detract significantly from eye appeal. If I was buying one for my collection, I might avoid this one for this reason and might merit a discount from the assigned grade.

I can not see this one higher than 63 due to all the distracting spots. Probably should get a 64 but I just can not see it getting that.

The uneven lighting does make it tough to grade. My first thought when I saw it in hand was that I wouldn't buy it due to the spots. Trying to figure out how to reflect that in my offer.

I thought you owned it but unless you get a steep discount, I would look for a coin that sings to anyone who sees it. That's one of the things that I learned on CCF and was confirmed by my experience.

If you do not own the coin, pass. A lot of collectors simply will not buy a coin with tarnish spots. The so called carbon spot is typically a spot that is a result of impurities in the metal showing up as a black spot. It has nothing to do with carbon. This example appears to have had contact with sulfur on both sides before being put into the GSA holder.

I've come to an agreement on the bulk of the collection. The only coins left are a few we agreed to get graded before I make an offer & a few that have issues. This is definitely not one I'd buy for my collection. The seller inherited the coins, isn't a collector, & wants me to buy the last few coins. I'm just trying to come up with a price that's fair for both of us.

sharp strike is typical for a 81(CC). luster is broken in places. the eye appeal is going to affect the grade of this one as well as surface preservation. most of what we are seeing on the obverse is rub and not scratches and abrasions. I think without all those spots it would come in as MS63 but the eye appeal is going to drop a bit. MS62 maybe 62+

its still a CC and has a decent value. you'll need to decide at what price you feel comfortable as it could get worse over time

I am at MS62. Here is the issue with the black spots: as noted the spots could get worse with time. The example is not a good candidate to be conserved as spots from metal impurities often can not be removed. Black spots from tarnish can etch the coin surface and when removed leave a white spot. If conservation was attempted, the coin would loose the value of the GSA holder.

Looks MS-63 to me.
