Hey Everyone, I recently found this coin and it has me a little puzzled. The obverse of the coin looks just like a Wheat cent struck on a tapered planchet.
The coin is the correct circumference of a Wheat penny so it doesn't seem like it was squished after leaving the mint. The tapered side is also thinner than a normal Wheat cent.
The problem is on the reverse there is very strange pitting right where the taper occurs. To make it more confusing, the coin weighs 3.16g which definitely throws a lot of cold water on the tapered planchet theory.
Looks like a thinned planchet. But in this condition I doubt there would be a premium for it. Weight should be a tad under weight if a thinned planchet? If normal weight, then it is just a damaged coin.
