Acquired a first edition of Dr. Judd's United States Pattern,Experimental and Trial Pieces, published by Whitman in 1959 for the princely sum of $28 - not much more than what a new edition would cost. Slowly adding the basics to my library.

First edition was printed by Whitman in Racine Wisconsin but in the 9th edition, published in 2005, it became part of Whitman's Red Book Series.

The first coin in the Judd Catalog of Patterns: Judd-1

1792 1C Silver Center Cent J-1, BN, PCGS SP67BN

It is interesting that the engraver ran out of room when engraving the obverse legend and had to truncate the last word to INDUST similar to how the original reverse legend of the Sheldon-1 die pair for the 1793 cent also ran out of room and had to stop at AMERI. I can visualize the engraver being yelled at by his boss for poor planning.

Nice pick up. I also purchased this week the: United States Pattern Coins: Experimental and Trial Pieces, 9th Edition
by J. Hewitt Judd a used copy for $17.

There is always https://uspatterns.stores.yahoo.net/ a great site with a broken search system. Just about everything you need is there. Look for Pollack's Book though the Latest Whitman Red Book Series book is good too. Pollack's big blue out of print book can be expensive, but every now and then one sells cheap on ebay (under $50) I think I kept waiting and finally got my copy for $25! Usually see them at $75-200 range.

Great! I began a database of all the Two Cent patterns and sales over the past several decades, it started due to my research into the small motto proof and went from there.

The Gobrecht dollars are one of the more written about pattern coins, look for the Heritage Press book on them:

Fantastic addition to your library. As one passionate about books, hard cover and first additions, I had to settle on the 7th edition since a first is difficult to acquire. Not impossible, but far and few between. That said, you got a really good deal.
