Hi folks, well, what do I have here? Is this an excessively worn coin where all the arrows/rays are gone or does it look like someone purposely removed the arrows and rays? Considering the rarity of the coins without those features, I figured I should employ the expertise of the people in this forum. If you need other photos, just ask. Thanks for the help.

Guessing this is 1852-O, which did not carry the arrows and rays.

The '2' in the date does not look anything like the last digit in the coin I've got. The 1852-O '2' has a very stylized curl which isn't present on my coin.

The date has been obviously messed with. This is more likely the common 1858-O, in which the 8 was turned into a 3.
Suffering from bust half fever.

That I can see, would there be any way of definitively proving this theory with other identifying marks?

My bad, the 5 isn't shaped correctly for an 1852-O either. 1858-O is a good guess.

It's an 1858-O, die marriage WB-15 (obverse die 9, reverse die G). Obverse die 9 has a short die gouge between Liberty's chin and shoulder and a centered mm tilted left.

Thanks FortCollins for the detailed explanation! I won't be hanging onto this coin forever and I like to be precise when I'm selling my little treasures.

Glad to be able to help. There are three obverse dies matched with the 1858-O "G" reverse, and this is the only one that could possibly have been matched at the grade. In other words, a perfect combo of too much time on my hands while I'm literally waiting for paint to dry, and absolutely blind luck.

Thanks for sharing your coin with us!

Thanks jbuck! I've got enough little treasures for lots of questions plus sharing. I'm not so much of a coin person, I prefer the art of paper currency more.
