19? Mercury Dime "Broken Nose" Error?

Looks as though there is some kind of damage to both obverse and reverse. also the broken nose or missing bridge and odd shape to the tip of nose. please advise. Thanks in advance!

@roll, for sure the area around the date has been damaged. You can see the corresponding spot on the rev is also damaged. For the missing part of the nose, it could be either damage or over-aggressive die polishing following a die clash. I'm interested to see what others think.

Mercury dimes with the broken nose condition are definitely the result of die polishing. I collect 1940-S Mercury dimes and would not be surprised if this was a 1940. The San Francisco mint apparently didn't have enough dies for that year or didn't take care of them as there are many different severe die cracks with over polished dies.

@dave700x, the 1940-S Lincoln Cents have a similar issue. That date is the mother lode of Retained Cuds (or in the new lingo, "pre-cuds").
