Numerically, this would grade about a VG-8 but would also garner a details designation from all those scratches, so 12 dollars would be the most Id ever want to pay for this .

MrWhat, I was outside at the flea market, it was in a flip and I didn't have a magnifying glass. I guess $12 was a bit high but I talked him down from $18. I guess I have many lessons to learn.

Agree this is a details coin with all those scratches. It will probably be tough to sell.

Yes lots of scratches, but an inexpensive lesson for the beginning of your collecting old copper. Next time you'll bring a loupe I bet.

I've got a big bag of coins like that, they go for 8-10 bucks on ebay all day long. Combined with "no shipping", you did just fine.

Thanks Tim, I don't feel as if I got completely ripped off. It was just $12.

Think of it not as $12, but as a piece of classic American history (our country was only 72 years old at the time this was minted, and we had just won a war against Mexico), and you'll be fine.

It is a mere $12, but a learning experience.
