I came across this unusual coin on
ebay. After some research I found that it is, I believe, a very rare AE As of Carinus (282-285 AD), struck as Augustus. I was fortunate to win it for a modest price.
Carinus struck small numbers of denarii, quinarii, asses and semis along with all his many types of antoniniani. This coin is attributed as RIC, Vol. V, Part 2, #285 and is listed as a "Rarity 2" coin. It is 23 mm. in diameter and weighs 4.28 grams.

I was only able to find two photos of this type online and none in my collection of print catalogues. A kind soul on another site furnished me with a link to an example sold at auction in 2013 that sold for a hefty sum.
I was told that my coin appears to be a die match to this auction example.
