1948 D Penny - Odd Looking Number 8

Meztido New Member United States 27 Posts	Posted 05/06/2022 03:11 am Hey all, So recently I bought a lot of wheat pennies from an estate sale and time to time I get a chance to open the rolls and look what's inside (usually when the kids and wife are in bed, so rarely lol). So usually it's nothing special in these rolls. Got some beautiful blue/purple/rainbow toned cents and so far, this penny got my attention because the date looks so off. It kinda looks like the number 8 is melting off the penny. Is this something anyone has seen or would know anything about? Thanks all and looking forward to any insight. Copper is a relatively soft metal and can be displaced/moved/reshaped when hit--in this case it looks like a lateral hit on the upper surfaces of the 8. I'd keep it as a fun curiosity. Thus the left side of the date was altered. If this were a mint error, all the other devices would have been altered on both sides. Coin was tampered with. Report this Post to the Staff
