Hello Everyone, I dabble in US coins - usually Buffalo nickels - so early US gold coins are pretty much a mystery to me. But I have a line on an 1810 capped bust $5 (see pics), and I would like advice/comments. First question: Is it genuine? I think so - weight/size/general appearance seem right - but I am aware there are some pretty good fakes out there. SQ: If it looks right, then any ideas on condition? Are the obverse scratches adjustment marks, or just damage? Also, the coin is very bright, but don't know if that's evidence of cleaning as the surface looks really nice to me (apart from the scratches). Thanks to anyone who is willing to help!

The marks on the cheek do appear to be adjustment marks. I would value the example in the $10K range as a novice to gold my recommendation would be to buy from a reliable dealer and purchase an example in a TPG holder. The 5 on the reverse has what appears a die crack going through the bottom loop of the 5 that I could not find on another genuine 1810 $5 example with the same die crack. The die crack would give me concerns about the coin, and there are some raised bumps and pits. Pass on the coin. if you are spending that much money on a coin, get one without adjustment marks. Why is the seller offering the example raw?

to CCF! I'm leaning towards genuine. That appearance of a die crack in the bottom loop of the 5 is probably just the inner edge of the digit. I don't see any red flags to suggest a counterfeit. Also, there is a vertical die scratch between the 8 and 1 of the date that is present on at least a couple other examples that I found. Here's one of the same variety that sold on Heritage in the past. https://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half...ption-071515 It looks mint state to me, and the adjustment marks shouldn't be a problem as far as the grading.

Yes, adjustment marks and apparently genuine. This is a very high dollar piece. And do mean VERY high. As noted above it's easily worth 5 figures in USD if genuine and Mint State. It requires professional, in-hand authentication.

The fact that's it's raw would be an immediate stopper for me.

If I were left to my own judgement alone to assess this coin as genuine, I would need XRF results. Accurate weight needs to be known. I would also need detailed pictures of all known varieties against which I could compare the coin in question. ANS may be able to help, they may charge a small fee for this.
Color in the case may be due to lack of white adjustment when taking the picture.
I agree with the possibility that the parallel scratches on the obverse may be adjustment marks. These are more often found on European coins of this period and earlier.

looks like the Large date/Large 5 variety the coin looks original and looks MS. I'm thinking low MS maybe MS62 due to all the field abrasions. as BH1964 stated this would be 5 figure coin even at AU58. my only concern is why is a coin with this kind of value not certified
