I've noticed that people are overpaying for some types of coins compared to the heritage results, particularly capped bust (especially large size) dimes and quarters, as well as Twenty Cent Pieces. While I've been able to snag quite a few nice seated and Barber coins at well under market value, I've bid on about 10+ of these bust coins and lost every time, often by huge margins. It doesn't make sense

My Two Cents. I don't think there is necessarily any rhyme or reason to the coin market right now.

Buying now is for those who can tread in fast flowing waters and have a couple of life jackets.

Besides the obvious "usual" coins such as keys that are attractive and in high grade, I think most bets are off - especially if you're talking about coins at the heritage level. Price guides are equally useless - you are in fast-moving waters.

The large diameter bust dimes and quarters are really scarce if you are looking for a coin in decent condition (which for me is generally strong Fine to XF). When they do come up, they seem to attract a lot of attention. I did get a really nice 1825 bust quarter about 2 years ago for a good price but have been denied on the dime on many occasions due to price. I've put that particular coin on the back burner for now.

Same is true for the 20 cent pieces. I see a lot of them in G or VG, but if you want something in VF-XF, there's not much available. I still do need one of these for my type collection and am hoping to find one in the $200 range.

This is true. I've noticed that on the early bust halves, like 1809 to 1817, and especially if there's any kind of rarity or double date. At HA, these coins have been going for over retail, sometimes even cleaned or scratched ones! I guess I'll just have to pay it if I want one bad enough. If I keep waiting I'm afraid they'll go higher.

I had a long wait for the large size bust dime. I finally got one and was more or less pleased with it. I knew going in the grade and what it would look like. It is a strong VG and I am happy with it for the time being. I am now searching for the large size bust quarter at a price I can afford, which means VG.

I just try to decide how much I am willing to pay for a particular coin and stick to that limit. I lose far more auctions than I win, but if I do win then I am usually pleased with the deal.

Apparently the demand is there and people are willing to pay it. As stated earlier "rare" coins often will trade above greysheet and even retail at times.

I've felt a lot of the Bust coinage was under valued for years. I'm sure I'm not the only one and perhaps you're seeing that as well.
