1983 Lincoln Cent Spike Head - Coin Community Forum

You have a nice spike head that bisects when it meets the head. I've marked up a close up of your pic. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 05/20/2022 7:51 pm On the reverse, below the memorial, there are die clash marks. The 1983/1984 cents had a lot of issues with polishing and clashing that year. So it maybe more of a clash die rescue issue on these dies. Note the clash areas are the affected polishing many times on the obverse die. Looks like the reverse is a new younger die state marriage to the obverse. Report this Post to the Staff

So this coin has a die crack (spike head) and the dies used apparently had a die clash (either causing the die crack in the die, or it was already there). My question is: what are the cracks on the coin that appear to be a cracked planchet/cracked actual coin, and are they related to either the die crack, and/or the leftover die clash marks? Or are they a third issue separate from the other two? I'm talking about the black looking lines extending out horizontally left and right, along the top of Lincoln's hair, and on the left through the word "GOD". The raised line running diagonally down the back of his head is obviously a die crack. I am just wondering what those other horizontal lines are that look like cracks in the actual planchet? -makecents- Pillar of the Community United States 8757 Posts	Posted 05/21/2022 7:46 pm With your pics, I'm not 100%, where I blew it up, and lost clarity but would say the other "lines" you are referring to, are abrasions or plating issues, they do not appear to be die cracks. What I pointed out with arrows, are die cracks. You keep referring to the cracks in the planchet, these are "die cracks", transferred to the clean, undisturbed planchet, which is the coin you have in hand. I'm sure the highly abraded die, because of the possible clash being scratched away, does weaken the die, leading to die cracks. -makecents- Report this Post to the Staff
