I know very little about quarters but understand this one is pretty rare in any grade. A dealer sold me a huge collection of coins at face value, all marked as errors, and 99% are some sort of minor die chip or die crack. They are all in little tan coin envelopes, so have random toning and degradation from that, and I only looked at a couple where the label suggested maybe something I'd be interested in. Out of about $90 face in quarters this is one of only two I found of interest (the other is a tilted partial collar). It was marked "strong doubling on LIBERTY" so I checked it out and found a winner. The other ones I looked at marked "doubling" were all machine doubles. So it's a details coin, especially with the scratches on the reverse, but still seems like at least XF and maybe AU so probably worth the price I paid for the whole lot. 1965 Washington quarter doubled die - DDO-001, FS-101

Wow, amazing find, TB! Very rare variety, like most of the early clad Washington quarter doubled dies. I don't think I've ever seen a post of someone finding one of these on here.

Those split serifs on LIBERTY are dramatic. Nice!

Thanks for all the super comments! The overall low eye appeal and guaranteed details grade does tempt me to try acetone. But with another ninety bucks worth of coins in the same condition I suppose there is a lot of test material available to try it out and see what would happen. My general thought would be to send it to NGC as they are the best at conserving coins, and, I really prefer not to monkey with the expensive stuff.

Very nice! With only 15 examples graded by PCGS and such a well known variety, this is certainly a rare die. Extremely tough to locate and very valuable as well, congrats!
