I can't find anything that matches this 1987p rossevelt dime or makes sense to me. It doesn't line up with a die clash. Something is going on in the background of both the obverse and reverse. I notice it around the outer sections on the obverse and easily seen throughout the entire reverse. Anyone have any ideas or know what is going on with this 1987p dime?
Thanks

An outdoor find by a metal detector. The brown color wears off in circulation, turns black. The tops of the devices are what are showing the normal color as the black also wears off of the raised devices. That is what you are seeing. Just a spender. It kind of an abandoned car for many years that was left to endure the elements. Now just a fading memory of what it used to be. Put it back to work.

Hey coop, it was really the color of the obverse that I was referring to. It was around the rim. Like next to the U in United, well all the way around the outer edge of the reverse. What is going on around the center devices, to the right of the torch. I figured the obverve dark color was due to being exposed to the elements but the rainbow color and well visible issue on the reverse are what really was my concern.
Thanks coop

Different soil conditions will produce varying color shades.

Thanks coinfrog, appreciate the 411 on the different color tones to different soils. My eye wasn't really caught by the colors more by what appeared to me to be trailing devices above and aside them. If it's nothing then it is what it is. Thanks again

@coin, it is hard not to get caught up in the surface staining, especially on the reverse. However, it sounds like you are talking about something else. Maybe you can add a really good close-up of the area with additional marks (trailing devices).

@Spence, sure np. There also is the appearance of an expanded rim from a possible collar issue. Collar clash? There easier to spot when it is a basic collar clash. I didn't want to keep hopping on this coin if no one saw what I was referring to but here are some pics
Thanks,

Ok those are pretty good. Thx for following up with us.

I think that the rim itself looks pretty normal, but the die that struck this coin maybe have been quite tired. That could explain the extra metal between the tops of the letters and the rim.
