This coin is a counterfeit. The clear date punch and mushy details is a giveaway. Take a look at STATES. The letters are thicker, different then a genuine coin.

Now I see that the date looks different than on a genuine piece, it throws the authenticity to more likely counterfeit, unless this a special Newcomb# which I am not too familiar with.

On reverse, look at the first leg in the A if states. It is too thick on OP example. What about the two berries across from the T in cent. Where did they go? The berries should show up on F or VF example.

The coin has a number of problems that make it a fake, and I am sure that you can find more. Get your money back.

My first thought was it's fake..

Maybe the specialists can weigh in on this.

I don't know where you're getting these images to compare but I'd recommend getting a free login at Heritage Archives, where you'll have 1000 authenticated examples of 1826 1c to examine. Or just go to PCGS https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin.../images/1144. Don't fixate on the date; look at everything else too. Look at STATES on yours - it looks like a cartoon compared to a real one.

Now this lower grade example looks like the real deal to me, gradewise a G-6 to me.

I knew it was a ringer as soon as I saw the date. That's why I asked how it had been acquired.
