Hi all. So I've got a $500 dilemma on my hands... last year, while in the bank getting change and larger bills related to work, I asked the teller (as usual) if she had any "small face, older style" bills. Well, she showed me she had 10 $50 bills, 1988 series. Absolutely beautiful notes. Well-centered. Crisp. Choice. Consecutive notes (well, 8 are, then a skip to 9 and 10.) Simply looked like the notes just rolled off the press at the Bureau of Engraving. So, I safely set them aside in my currency storage box. I adore the older style notes as they are less and less common, and finding a Grant in this condition is impossible it seems. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut, now I am thinking... hmm, would that $500 be better off invested in some high grade Morgans, or something else? Clearly, it is not just $10 we are talking about here. Any thoughts?

You might be able to sell them on ebay but after fees you could possible come out loosing money. If they were mine I'd spend em to put them back in circulation. It'd raise a few eyebrows since it doesn't have the strip in em

I hear you, Grace, but the notes are just stunning. sigh. As it is, I've got a few $100 notes from 1981 to 1990 series that are the old style that I've been putting into circulation (the ones in condition lower than EF, such as F or VF)... usually causes a double-take by merchant.

It all depends upon your pocketbook how many "discretionary dollars" you can have just laying around. I agree with you though that the older bills are really nice.

Keep one or two, spend the rest.
They're not old enough or rare enough to worry about yet.

I've decided to spend half, keep half. Thanks for comments, all.

If you are going to spend them, you should at least offer them for trade to people onthe forum. Its a shame to put purty notes back into circulation if someone would be willing to take care of them.

karrlot - good point. I was thinking about doing this, though the response for a high $$ bill that is relatively new may be weak. I'll take some shots of the bills and post this week on CCF to see if there is any response. :)

Good idea. You have nothing to lose but the time it takes to wait!
