PCGS - Some modern coins become spectacles when they hit the market - something we've seen many times over in recent years when limited-edition coins or other hot items hit the street. This was the case when the 2014-W 50th Anniversary Gold Kennedy half dollar was offered for sale by the United States Mint. The coin, marking the golden anniversary of the first Kennedy half dollar, released 50 years earlier in 1964, became notable as the first United States half dollar minted from gold.

The 2014-W 50th Anniversary Gold Kennedy half dollar sold like hotcakes in the days after its initial release in August 2014. Courtesy of PCGS TrueView.

The coin made quite the splash when the U.S. Mint released the .999-fine, three-quarter-ounce gold coin on August 5, 2014, in conjunction with the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money. While the coins were simultaneously offered at the U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia and Denver as well as the mint's headquarters in Washington, D.C., it was the Chicago-area coin show where thousands convened to buy the coin, sold with a household limit of just one coin.

Many stood in line, anticipating the Noon Eastern drop, simply to sell their newly acquired gold Kennedy halves to coin dealers at the show for a tidy profit. And for many this was a lucrative proposition. The proof coin was issued by the U.S. Mint for $1,240. Yet, within days, many specimens were selling for more than $2,500, and some traipsed well beyond the $5,000 mark. The first specimen sold at the coin show in Chicago was graded PR70DCAM by PCGS and was later sold in a private treatise transaction for $100,000!

Ultimately, the U.S. Mint distributed 73,772 examples of the 2014-W Cold Kennedy half dollar, which was very close to the maximum authorized production of 75,000. Despite the runup in prices on the post-secondary market in the days, weeks, and months after the 2014-W Gold Kennedy half dollar, prices have long since settled closer to melt value. Lower prices have made it easier for collectors to buy the best specimens for their PCGS Registry Sets, many of which accommodate the 2014-W Gold Kennedy half dollar.

This one really tempted me when it was released, but I was still not ready to sink that much money into one coin.

I was perusing an old copy of Coin World from 2019 the other day and there was an article on this coin and how poorly it had performed in the 5 years (at the time) since release. It also mentioned that the initial product limit of 100,000 had been reduced to 75,000 when it was clear that orders wouldn't even get close to 100k.

Another 5 years having gone by since that article was written, I decided to search yesterday for completed sales on ebay of the gold 3/4 oz coin. Looks like somewhere between $2,000 - $2,200 for an ungraded coin in OGP now. I assume this is in large part due to the current spot of gold, but that's still a $200-$300 premium over spot and about $1000 more than original issue price. 70s are a couple hundred bucks higher.

Though I just double checked and one sold today for $1500. At almost $400 below spot, someone got a fantastic deal on that one!

Anyway, interesting data.

As I said earlier, this one was tempting. I still do not own a gold coin, and I wish I had the foresight to hold my nose and buy this one when it came out. The prospect of me ever owning a gold coin now is all but gone.

I I stopped buying gold coins from the mint back in 2019. I don't have many, mostly the smaller guys... a few $5 commemoratives and $5 (1/10 oz) AGEs.

It was a stretch at the time but I did buy the Kennedy 3/4 oz coin upon issue and I still enjoy it. I'm glad it has rebounded as it was selling below issue price in 2019.

If you play the registry game

NGC calls it one of the "Anniversary Coins and Medals" and there is a set just for the 2014 coins. But it's also part of "Anniversary Gold Issues, 2009-Date, Complete", "100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins, Fourth Edition", and four of the general Kennedy half dollar sets.

PCGS calls it type 5 of the Kennedy half and also has a 2014 set. The gold half is also part of a few other sets.

I bought at least one example of every variety of 2014 Kennedy Halfs, and still have all except the gold Kennedy.
I owned it for only a few months before an unexpected job loss and forced sale. I know I'll never own another, but it was interesting to have it in my grubby hands for a few months.

@BStrauss3 that is indeed interesting regarding the registries.
