I'm trying to trace a BCV number but don't know if there's any way of tracking down a number (in this case BCV# 2021) online.

Advice anyone?

Wildwinds has a list of Byzantine coins by BCV number; it's incomplete (only the coins in their database, I'm guessing) but it does have 2021 (a Latin Rulers of Constantinople coin, as it happens).

Note that a lot of sources (including Wildwinds) would refer to BCV numbers as SB numbers (as in Sear Byzantine), which could be interfering in your search. I suspect you might have gotten a lot more results for SB 2021 than BCV 2021.

Also sometimes attributed as "S 2021". Here is a link to one such example:

Have a copy of Sear's "Byzantine Coins and their values" here. Sear just numbers the identified coins from 1 to 2645... No prefix.

The "SB" prefix is a convenience? Handy shortcut?

Yes, the "SB" simply identifies the reference (Sear Byzantine). "SB", 'S", "Sear", "BCV", all the same, just depends on the cataloguer.
