There are times when a coin is struck with a mis-aligned die, then one side will be normal while the other will either have a thinner rim on one side or else a nonexistent rim. I'm thinking that is what you have here, although I'm a little unsure of what you are saying. By "obverse", do you mean the side with the portrait?
