Hi guys, sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm no expert on Canadian cents but I've got some for sale on ebay and just had a potential buyer asked me if my 1965 Cents had small or large denticles. I said they were small dots and blunt 5, but as for denticles? These are different from dots but how? Anyone got a pic please? Someone on an older thread said the 65 has no denticles. Thanks.

Denticles are attached to the rim. The 1965 reverse has denticles, but no variety based on them is known.

Not sure what your buyer is referring to, 1948 was the only year with both small and large denticles. 1965 had small and large beads as you stated..

Denticles are similar to beads with both normally found along the edge of the rim. Denticles look like small grains of rice with rounded ends and take up 2 to 3 times the area of what a dot on the rim would be. They are put along the rim to prevent or lessen any die cracks that could form. Denticles have been around the rim, usually both sides, but sometimes just one, since Canada has had coins. A coin will have either denticles or beads on each side.

Quote: 1955 also has large and small denticles....... Never heard of this one. There is also a large and small denticles for the 1977 5 cent along with the high and low 7 varieties. I always just figured it was due to die polishing but who knows. Coinman91 was the first I heard point it out on the 1977. If you havent seen the difference grab a few 77 5 cents and check the denticles sizes, they very quite a bit.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I get it now. My buyer was uninformed, but I thought he knew more than me. LOL

Denticles are the lines close to the rim of the coin. Sort of like a pattern.

Denticles = dentils, the tooth-like projections from the rim on series such as Indian Head cents.
