I ordered some take-out today for the family and had to wait for the food to come out. There was a little tray of pennies by the cash register and, of course, I had to look inside.

I found this!

Give-A-Penny,-Take-A-Penny...

So today I did the "take a penny" thing. I really wanted to put something back but I have any change with me. Our family goes to this restaurant often enough so I'll have something special ready for the next visit - like 5 modern pennies. Will that equalize my karma?

I must bring this to your attention; it's not a penny it's a cent.

Honestly,

I think taking the cent is fine. I mean who ever left it there was giving it as a gift to who ever needed it. I mean you taking it bc you needed it is fine (needing it for your collection is needing it just like needing it for a purchase). I have never seen a Wheat cent in there, but I mean it is being offered as a gift.

I wouldn't take the whole dish :), but I mean I don't think taking a Wheat cent is stealing either.

Quite the opportunist aren't you. Please ease your conscience and leave those 5 cents next time. By the way, nice grab.

I think this whole "cent" versus "penny" thing is a bit pedantic. Haven't they always been called pennies? Don't the "Give a penny, take a penny" trays say just that?
What goes in the third roll down in this picture.
Ok so officially we all know they are cents but I don't see the need to jump on someone if they mention the "P" word.
Not having a go, it's just my opinion.

Further proof that the claims of "unsearched give a penny, take a penny trays" are not true!

Nice find!

I too don't see a problem with calling them pennies. Whether intentional or not, the use of the word penny to describe our 1 cent coin is ubiquitous and accepted in the American lexicon.

If penny is not allowed, then neither is "buffalo" nickel. That animal is a bison.

I don't get the whole "cent" vs "penny" thing, either. Nickels don't say "nickel" on them. The mint has referred to cents as pennies.

Same here....I have seen that a few times on here and I would think the people making a big stink about it would have more important things to worry about. Maybe it's just me, but I dont think it's necessary to insist that people call them "cents" vs "pennies". When someone says "penny" I think most of us know what they are talking about.

Its more like a "Slang" for cent that came from other countries. The "proper" name for the US "penny" is really CENT.
Penny came from most other countries and just seemed to end up here. Its all Tomato Tomato to me..lol
People say "POP" and people say "SODA". doesn't matter to me as long as its Pepsi..lolol
