A strange thing happened to me yesterday. For the first time ever my registration to bid at an auction house was rejected.

I found the auction via Numisbids, and the auction house, Nihon Coin Auction, had a couple of ancients and Tokugawa-era Japanese coins I was interested in. Usually the latter coins go for high-yen at auctions within Japan, but the strong dollar (1:134) negated some of that.

I checked the auction terms and found the company shipped abroad and had reasonable buyer's fees. So I submitted my registration.

It was rejected. So I asked why. And they said, "We're sorry, cannot send to USA by COVID-19."

The irony? I lived in Japan, had plans to visit there (which I recently had to cancel because the gov't isn't allowing in tourists) and speak Japanese (albeit at a modest proficiency).

I hadn't realized that electronic payments abroad spread COVID-19.

Roma. Leu. CNG. Heritage (US, Europe and Asia), HD Rauch, Numismatik Neumann, NAC, Savoca, Stephen Album - if there's an ancient at auction, I'll be there. I even registered successfully and bid on coins at Ginza Coins in Tokyo.

But NCA doesn't want my money....

That is strange. Their reply is confusing, to say the least.

It probably has to do with delivery. I'm not familiar with this particular firm and what carrier(s) they use but a quick check of the Japan Post website shows that at least one international parcel class (SAL) from Japan to the United States is currently suspended.

Last November I had to refund a customer in Australia because USPS had suspended parcel service to that country.

It ain't over 'till it's over and it still ain't over, unfortunately.

I haven't bought any coins from Japan but have recently bought a Japanese sword and prints from there with no problem in shipping due to covid, so their reply is very odd.
