Hello All,

Hoping to pick brains to find out if there is a reason /excuse / unique mint related process that would explain the number engraved on this buffalo cent
Anyone have info on what this may be ? Am accepting all scenarios ;)

That is called aa counterstamp.
It was applied after the coin left the mint.
Hard to say why it was applied.

This would be a Buffalo nickel, not penny. The marks appear to be counter-stamps. These weren't applied during the minting process, but after the coin was in circulation.

Fixed.

Interesting counterstamp @ree! Just not a mint error.

As noted above, the 1 is a counter stamp done after the coin left the mint. The F is part of the original coin's design. It stands for the designer's last name of Fraser. You should find this on any Indian Head nickel. James Earle Fraser was the designer.
