Hello- new here and looking for a little help / advice. Recently found this beautiful 1817 large cent in the bottom of my great grandfathers coin jar. Looking for help identifying if this is an error coin. Appears to be maybe double struck or even clashed dies? New to coin collecting and having a difficult time finding information online. I do realize the coin isn't in great shape and has environmental damage. Attempted to take photos in different angles with different lighting and even used a microscope. Just can't determine the error and photos don't do it justice! The date looks odd to me. I see 13 stars at one angle and then random misplaced stars at different angles. There also appears to be the outline of the matron head to the right of the large center head. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

@lda, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that this is a pretty cool coin jar find. The coin has seen a lot of circulation, and I'm not sure that most mint errors are going to be distinguishable. I'm not seeing anything usual beyond heavy wear, but if you post a good close up of an area that looks odd, then that would help. Thx.

It looks like this coin is far to worn down from circulation. I'm not seeing any errors due to it extreme condition. Some of the stuff you are seeing may just be Pareidolia.
But that said, some experts on this coin should be along shortly.

Thank y'all for your replies and advice. I truly appreciate it. I am attempting to upload additional photos. Just now learning how to use this forum so appreciate the patience and understanding!
The areas of interest to me are:
* the "7" in 1817 - the top of the 7 appears elongated?
* the faint outline of the matron head to the right of the center of the coin
* the smaller faint raised stars in between the larger border stars.

Thank you all again for the help and welcome!

The coin almost looks dented behind Liberty's head - is this the case?

There's a die break between the 1 and 7 of the date. It looks like a Newcomb-12 variety with die cracks around the stars. Here's an example of that variety from a Heritage auction. It's pretty worn to tell if there's anything else going on.

Zurie-
Thank you soooo much. That information is very helpful!! I know the coin is very worn out, but it has lots of sentimental value since it was my great grandpa's! I wanted to learn more about the coin but wasn't sure what to look for so I truly appreciate your help so much!
