I thought this was pretty neat. I found this holed 1865 Indian Head cent in the middle of a corn field while I was Indian artifact hunting.

That is pretty neat. I wonder if the square hole was created by an old-style nail used to hang this up on the door/wall of a house back in the 1800s.

That's what I was thinking. Either that or a necklace or something.
Rest in Peace

Or the person that made the hole couldn't see straight that's why he messed up a round hole .

Great start on assembling a set of holed Indian cents, this coin is ....

Being a big fan of coin conservation, I'd humbly recommend some gentle swabbing with "Coin Care" or acetone; this, to lift the surface contaminants that, if left unabated, will further corrode the surfaces.

Thanks for all the input. It was definitely an odd find in the middle of nowhere. I'll try the acetone swabbing.

Just curious how long should I soak it in acetone?

Acetone, the kind you buy in the hardware store, won't hurt a coin. Personally, I'd let this coin soak for about an hour, then gently swab it with a Q-tip. Considering how green this coin appears, you might repeat the soak & swab. Finally, note the color of the dirty swabs to gauge your success.
