If not acid, as coop said, maybe it was burned or in a house fire, then harshly cleaned of a layer of soot. Nothing in the minting process would cause this, as far as I know. It's the sellers first listing. I'm really iffy on this one. ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
