It is just damage.
The nickel cladding has been removed exposing the copper core..
Please lay coins on a flat surface when shooting photos.

@dj, first welcome to CCF. Second, for sure it is damage, although I am not so sure that a layer of cladding is missing. You could post the weight and we would know for sure. Personally, I'm seeing surface staining, such as occurs from chemical/environmental exposure. This dime has had a hard life.

I agree, looks like a coin that has been buried in acidic soil for a good while. A damaged dime, not a mint error.

Yep, sorry, it's not "copper coloured", it's just brown, probably from tannic acid staining from soil. You can see on the "high points" the brown colour has worn away, showing the grey metal underneath, so I'm guessing it spent some time underground, then was dug up and went back into circulation for a while.
