I was watching Coin Country yesterday and they mentioned a Block "R" variety made in 1975 and dated 1976,i guess the block r is how you tell it was minted in 1975,my question is which r do I look at? Does any one have one the can post a photo of next to a non block r? Are they rare or valuable? Thanx in advance. John1

I know there are 2 varieties of bicentennial ikes, Bold and narrow/or delicate lettering on the reverse. I believe the bold lettering are the scarcer ones.

"The 1976 Eisenhower dollars have two distinct types, identifiable by the style of lettering on the reverse of the coin. Type 1 coins use bold, block lettering. Type 2 coins use thinner, more delicate lettering. Generally Type 1 coins are more difficult to find in higher grades, especially the Philadelphia issue." Type I has has wider lettering on the reverse, in lower relief. They switched to Type II during 1975, from what I understand...so you won't know in which year a Type II was actually minted. Here's my 1976-S Type I, if I might show it off:

All 1975 proof sets have Type I dollars, while all 1976 proof sets have Type II dollars. All 1976 40% Silver dollars, proof and uncirculated, are Type I. I have yet to read about any discoveries to the contrary, but that does not mean that no mistakes were made! As for the business strike pieces, it is generally accepted that the same rules apply, however, it is impossible to know for certain.

Addendum: on the 40% silver Ike's, like mine, there was no Type II.

I've been toying with the idea of submitting it to see if it would pull down an MS68. It looks better than just about every 67 on heritage, and looks better than many of the 68's.

Most definitely looks better than mine, but of course I would never trade mine.
