The fact that I have just found out that there is such a coin really shows how new I am to this hobby!
My son is in the Marines and due to ship out to Afghanistan soon. I think it would be great to give him something special and unexpected.
I have found uncirculated and proof, from those with original packaging to some slabbed at MS70. What is the difference between the MS70 and a MS70 UCAM? What I would really like is some opinions on what is the best one to get. Which would be the better investment? I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but what do you all think?

Thanks,

Normally if it's anything bu PCGS, NGC, or ANACS I wouldn't trust a "70" grade.

And it's a beautiful coin in hand and totally worth it. One of the very few US coins I actually have in my collection

I have both the Uncirculated and the proof. the Unc ( as we call it ) is a beautiful coin and I would suggest you find it in the original U S Mint packaging, the proof is a mirrored finished coin and is made a totally different way, If I were you I would get either one as long as it is in the original U S Mint packaging, or get either coin the UNC or the PROOF in a slab from one of the top 3 grading companies as Grace ha suggested, PCGS, NGC OR ANACS, this way you can not go wrong for the money and the special spirit of giving this coin to your son will only hold it's value if not gain , best of luck, You must be a very proud dad to have your son serve his country and protect us all, I salute him and you, Mike...

I did mail to mention that if he is going to be carrying this with him then I Don't recommend the OGP that it normally comes in. It's not meant to take abuse.

If it is going to be a "pocket coin" (good luck- prayer- etc.)
than do not waste money on a proof or a graded coin
get the uncirculated version
they are selling for about US $89.00

Quote:
2005 Marine Corps Silver Dollar Features:

* Issued to commemorate the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps
* Obverse (front) features a rendition of the famous raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima in Japan
* Reverse (back) features the official emblem of the United States Marine Corp
* Uncirculated condition
* Philadelphia mint
* 90% solid silver
* Original government packaging - acrylic holder, box and certificate of authenticity

a quick search turned up 6 of them for this price.

Thanks, I appreciate you three taking the time to reply! Richard, those prices are what I have been seeing also. I have found a NGC slabbed MS70 for around $130 which I am leaning to. I had not thought of this being a 'pocket piece' due to the size and weight. G.O...glad to hear that you think it is a good looking piece as all I have so far are pictures. And Mike, thanks for the kind words...there sure are a lot of young kids out there in foreign countries putting there lives on the line for us.

If you want a pocket piece ignore the 70's. with some looking you can get anything less than a 70 in either a slab or the original packaging for about or even less than issue price.

just for the record the mint produced a total of 600,000 of the USMC comm. approx. 420,000 were proofs. so the unc. are actually rarer. I purchased two of each from the mint. I gave one of the unc. to my sister who has built something of a "shrine" to the military members of our family. my father was in the USMC during WWII, and I was in the Marine Corps, near the end of the Viet Nam war, (1971-1973). she has the coin on display, along with other military memorabilia, centered around the family members who served in the military.
