If anyone here with experience has hints on these please let me know, any hints are MUCH appreciated. If you know a better place to post this question in the forum please let me know too since I'm new here. My wife bought these without consulting me but I suspect all 3 are fakes but still, they "look" real enough + they aren't very expensive types! She still hasn't paid yet so we can still avoid to pay if they turn out to be fakes. All are from the same seller, seem honest with good feedback but since the seller is in Hong Kong & selling such coins... that raises a red flag for me. Here are the auctions:

[eBayItem]180326984492[/eBayItem]
[eBayItem]180326973646[/eBayItem]
[eBayItem]180326978862[/eBayItem]

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with any of those coins but you're right about the Hong Kong thing. It's legal to make fake coins over there, so I stay away from any seller from HK. I hope these turn out to be the real deal though...

First I am no expert....

The 1849 Vic has some issues that would make me stear clear.
Obv
The beading and the bow on the top of the crown are a wrong. The ear is too well defined in a coin of this grade.
Rev
the clover leaf stem look s odd and the leaves seem to be spaced too far apart.
The lions faces are wrong a again too well defined for a coin of this overall grade.

My personal non expert opinion is it might have been artificially aged. which would lead me to the question why? the deduction would be its not real. I personally would not buy this coin without a return policy.

Very tough call.

I'd normally avoid Hong Kong like the plague. This could well be the exception to the rule, however. The seller has almost 300 Feedback going back to 2004, most of it for coin sales and a lot of it to people with large Feedback ratings themselves. His pics are excellent. The coins pictured look precisely as I'd expect them to in the context of their age (although I'm not specifically familiar with them).

He has only one Negative Feedback, and I quote:

Quote:
This dealer sells fake spanish coins.

That's entirely possible - there are as many fake Reales on the market as real ones - but there's no context associated with the Feedback. Did the seller identify the coin as fake in the auction? Is it a good enough fake to deceive the seller? I don't know.

I would be cautiously optimistic in this case, but I cannot make the decision for you.

After my request, I got this email from him:

Hi!Very sorry, do not reply you in time, because I just go home today.
1849 BRITAIN VICTORIA SILVER GODLESS FLORIN EF-AU weight:11.3g
1861 GERMANY ANHALT BERNBURG BEAR THALER AU-UNC 18.5g
1883 KINGDOM OF HAWAII 1/2 DOLLAR SILVER COIN AU 13.4g
I guarantee all my coin are authentic.BEST WISHES!XIE

Now I checked these in Krause, the florin & the german coin seem ok. The Hawaii halfdollar is NOT! supposed to be 12.5g in Krause but here it's 13.4g. Since he admits the faulty weight (& he obviously guessed I'd check since I asked for exact weights) that leads me to believe he didn't know it was fake.

I'm almost sure but in case anyone here knows better, it really isn't possible for such big weight difference to occur in real coins, or is it?

Hi,
I've looked at many of these Hawaii 1883 1/2 Dala coins when I was planning to buy one. After some study, I concluded that a certified coin was the only option, since a pretty close forgery exists. A while back, I found a site describing markers for a forgery transferred from the authentic coin used to make the copies. I cannot find that site as reference now, but I still see enough to warrant concern. The king's bust is hard to analyze since forger's mistakes will get lost in those details. But on the reverse, the details should be crisp and clean, and not as indicated below:

1. The upper left quadrant of the crest has raised lump of metal that is not present on certified coins. (ie it did not exist on the original dies)
2. There are a few other raised areas that I did not see on the 6 certified coins I compared (arrows).
3. The detail of the central palm motif is far too mushy for an "AU" coin, or even a weak strike. I think they're trying to pass mushy details of a forgery as slight wear.
4. I don't like the finish of the coin. I don't see much in the way of a mint surface for the assumed grade, and the toning looks suspiciously as a way to hide problems with details.
5. The relief of the legends appears to vary from left to right--not seen on certified coins.
6. I dislike making HK a red flag, but it's a present reality that many fakes originate in China. As stated elsewhere, the biggest flag outside the coin are no returns. Then there are the telltale hidden buyer IDs, and this ominous comment on forgeries.

All of the above is just my opinion.

Than you KurtS.

You're absolutely right! I got a phot of a certified one from ebay & compared them. Apparently, I was comparing earlier to a another fake sold on ebay (though from 1000+ 100 percent positive feedback US seller). Also, a definate clue is the weight as I mentioned earlier, this one according to the seller himself weighs 13.4g.

Of all I've seen & as far as I am concerned, this is a fake. By extension the other two are also suspect, even though the weight is correct. I emailed that I have no intention on paying over $200 for three fake coins. Thanks to all who took the time to help, much appreciated.

Yeah, if that's truly 13.4g that's pretty far off, especially if it's a pressure-cast basemetal copy.
One guess is the copy was made thicker to give it an accurate heft, but they didn't think exact weight mattered?
But that's pure speculation on my part--glad you avoided the Hawaii coin. Imo, that casts the others in doubt too.
