Ok community I plucked this 76 S Lincoln Memorial cent out of a proof set. I suspect this is some sort of toning going on here . All input is appreciated.

Agree this is toning of some sort. It was not a plated coin to begin with, but a solid alloy.

a 1976 cent was not a cladded coin, it is 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin (all mixed up together) it is some strange toning (intentional? who knows.) There is also a finger print of the same color just above the date. Is it possible that it was a gold plated coin and the copper colored areas were protected by a n oil film so the plating didn't take hold?

No print marks, maybe something on a latex glove?

I kinda like it. Might be interesting to see if the toning ingulfs the whole coin in a few years.

OK so , just got back from the Florida Fun Show . One of the vendors had a 1975 S proof coin with the exact type of toning going on? So now the question becomes are the planchets exposed to a chemical prior to minting which then causes the coin to tone once released down the road ? Any one else with an example?
