One more I found in that lot of mixed foreign coins. Now it seems more likely this is 1600s Japan (style is similar to a couple other 1600s Japanese coins I have), but I need confirmation on what this is.

@mr, this looks like a Wang Mang (Xin Dynasty) cast cash from China just after the switch from BC to AD dating.

Thank you Spence, I didn't know it was that old ... Now I guess I can put this in with my ancient Greek and Roman coins

Well, to be sure if it is authentic, then it is old. There is nothing that screams fake to me, but I'm always a bit suspicious. Did you buy from a reputable seller?

The patina does not look like the typical "fake old coin patina" you see on modern replicas. I'd be inclined to agree it's genuine.
Prior to Wang Mang, the Chinese currency had been stable ever since the foundation of the Empire over 200 years earlier, with just a single change in design over that time period.

Wang Mang implemented four currency "reforms" during his brief 14 year reign. Each one caused confusion and chaos, and ultimately saw the central government rake in lots of extra money at the expense of the common people he allegedly represented. I believe these coins are from the third reform.

This was amongst a large lot of mixed coins in a glass Nescafe coffee jar from a couple who were selling many other items from a flea market which I going to (they had a few coins, but probably didn't want to mess with that many, so sold in bulk)

That thread is quite informative and for sure helped some.

It is not fake, the coin is quite common and numerous, no reason to fake it.
