First post...hope this works out. Had this coin, not sure if previous owner cleaned it. Need help in grading it.   |

The weight seems to be .95 ounce on a small kitchen food scale. Once it went to 1 ounce, I touched it again and back to .95 ounce.I was amazed to hear there are fakes, guess I shouldn't be, there are fake everything's.

The front looks polished and the reverse looks like a Chinese counterfeit. So it's a details coin if real, no grade, and a pocket token if fake. It's not illegal to own a counterfeit coin, but it is illegal to try to sell it if it is counterfeit.

A MS Morgan should weigh 26.73 grams. This coin would be AU if it were real, so it should weigh slightly less than that. So a weight of 28 grams is well overweight, pointing to counterfeit as well.

28 grams is high and not within tolerance. Nothing specific stands out to me of this coin being counterfeit. The Rim Fin looks unusually sharp. AU Details with the weight being a red flag. I forget that I have a Tanita jewellery scale, much better than the kitchen food scale. Just weighed it and it came in at 27.5 grams. Really want to thank all of you for responding to me.What ever it turns out to be, I will be happy knowing the results, be what they may.

Ok a more accurate weight was really helpful. This does seem a bit overweight. Can you please confirm that a magnet is not attracted to it? Assuming not, you could do a specific gravity test next or other nondestructive tests to get at the alloy.

Today, after reading some of the answers. I went on line and saw a video. One tip they said was check with a magnet. I have a good one and there is no attraction at all.

If you have another silver dollar to compare, you can try the ping test. If it sounds like silver, then it is certainly genuine.

Back on-line to see how to do a specific gravity test. Use a half plastic water bottle, tared it to zero, used dental floss to suspend the coin. Took my 27.5 g and divided by 2.7g from the water and got 10.18. Unfortunately my Tanita scale only does grams to 1 decimal place. Had another 1901 Morgan silver dollar with lots more wear. Weighed 26.2 then divided by 2.6 to get 10.07 What do these numbers tell me? |
