Hi All,

A couple of years ago I sent some submissions to NGC and one of them was the pictured 8 Reales.

My intention was to get is certified and then set it back but things have changed and now I need to move it on.

When NGC returned it, it was in a 'not suitable for certification' bodybag but it did come with the 'authentic details grade' purple label.

It is rough looking for sure but would anyone be able to help with regards to a date or assayer or even an approximate value?

Thank you very much in advance!

Vinnie

Well, it's definitely Potosi, "looks" to be assayer T (could possibly be P) - but either way, definitely late 1610s-mid 1620s. Note the one clearly defined castle is in the lower L quadrant instead of the lower R... a hallmark of this timeframe.

That said, the piece is honestly, well, dreck... but hey, in this market, Spanish Colonial dreck sells.

I'll bet you could coax $100 or so out of it on ebay. I'd almost say eff it and ask $150 OBO, but I can't bring myself to say that for a piece in this condition.

PS - It DOES appear to be an 8R rather than a 4R from the relative size, but do verify that.
