Hi everyone. I have been buying Australian and NZ coins for my collection for a while and often when I buy them in and the old predecimal ones, seems to eb awkward placing them in the circulation thread. So thought I may start a new thread for say when you buy an old Australian penny, a Fijian Florin or a $2 coin from a dealer. These threads exist in the British, Global and USA/Canada section - so why not here? Mods - hopefully this okay and even better yet, if it can be stickied! I mean 90% of my non NZ coins are either swaps or ones I buy online rather than receive in change, as I have not been to Australia since 2013. Here is some coins to get the ball rolling.   1924 Australian Penny, high Fine with light Verdigris, a less seen date.  Australian penny mix with most dates and types of 1953 to 1964 plus a 1953 halfpenny. Most of these coins I had, but these are the upgrades. Very cheap as well ($10).   Millienium 50 cent coin, standard one I brought it as it only cost $1 and I could combine it with my other purchases. So if you get some fresh Aussie, Kiwi or Pacific coins show them here! |

Not sure I will post much in this thread. I just about never buy coins from dealers.
I mostly trade. Look forward to seeing some nice coins here though.

Thanks JBuck, I did it as someone told me to start it when I posted a 1930s florin in the Australian circulation thread and I can kind of understand as a 1930s florin does not really "circulate" anymore.
Also look at the thread in the British section, it is up to page 188, and the main coin acquisitions is on its like 400th page or something, same with banknotes and no doubt Canada and USA sections (Have not really looked).
Fortunately I am buying some more halfpennies and pennies to beef up that part of my Aussie collection and I can at least be counted on to add my purchases to it.
I think its fair to leave the coins found in change in their thread and the brought in coins here.

As Promised my new purchases included some semi key halfpennies   Here I have the 1914 and 1914H halfpennies, both with a mintage of around 1 million pieces and a 1929 halfpenny, much more common, but this example is basically VF. the 1914s are near Fine to Fine. My whole halfpenny collection is probably the least complete of all the Australian series.   Also a pair of the 1917 Bronze, Penny and Halfpenny - both were minted in Bombay India, possibly as this way they would avoid German U boats during the First World War. Bombay was used again in 1918 and then in 1919 they finally started minting Bronze coins in Australia. I already had a 1917 Halfpenny, but this one is higher grade (High Fine - near VF) and the Penny is a new add. |

I also brought this group of Fijian halfpennies, mainly as I just needed the 1943. The 1934 is also an upgrade for me. It was good value for $5 and the 1941 and 1949 are scarce coins.  The halfpennies are very cute. |

Apparently Australian predecimal coins are still legal tender. exchange rate: 12 pennies (or 24 half pennies) = 10 cents  |

Yes that may be true, but I am loath to spend my 1914 halfpennies I paid $15 each for to be worth 0.41666 of a cent each! Even a cheap or common halfpenny is 50 cents or 20 cents at the least.
That is strange you can do that there - but you would have to have rocks in your head to do so. For instance a Florin would be worth 20 cents face value. Even now with silver at the very low price of $18.80 American an ounce (It's still over $30 in Pesos de Nueva Zelanda!) a pre 1946 Florin has $12 worth of silver in it and a later one $7 of silver, so thats face value of 1/35 or 1/60 of its metal value.
JBuck, Ironically those 1942 and 1943 Fijian halfpennies look so much better on the other side. I see a lot of that staining and verdigris on Fijian coins and blame the hot wet climate there.

Just brought 30 old Australian Florins (All King George V) for under melt. More details soon. About 10 look like Canberras, but noticed a 1923 and 1917 in the bunch (One bad photo). Yes only I could noodle sterling silver florins!  Edited by Princetane

Thanks for starting this topic Princetaine. This is a 1951 PL half penny that I got from ebay. I had one but it was a roadkill. I have posted this in another thread about removing fingerprints (which is not possible in this case.) Of all of my coins, this has the best reverse cartwheel and lustre in hand. And it cost me $3 + minimal post mixed in with some others. And curiously, what sort of grade would this coin be? Thanks for looking.   The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.

Thank you! for adding to it, that means we can get more traction for the thread and eventually people will end adding their down under pieces to it!
I love the halfpenny, nice and shiny. I would say its EF as there is some light and noticeable wear on the Kings hair (Around his ear), also wear on his eyebrow and the high cheek, all the usual places first (I have a few "shiny" florins with the noticeable wear on them like that). The roo looks much better as the rim protected it more, and you can see rubbing on the roo's spine. Still given the average 1951 Halfpenny is F - VF, your coin is pretty amazing and a good price.

Nice halfpenny, ttkoo. You can't go wrong with $3 for a piece like that! I agree Princetane, it would be good to see more people add to this thread and show their new items - the British and USA threads are filled with posts of people sharing their new coins! I'll add a new coin that I purchased recently. I purchased this one from a coin dealer in person a few days back. The 1934-35 Melbourne Centenary florin had an original mintage of 75,000, with 21,000 of that mintage presumably melted down, making it a more difficult coin to acquire in the Australian pre-decimal coin series. This is the first example of this type I own, but I have another one I am waiting on (eagerly) in the post.   |

Nice buy, Coinanthebarb. I love the 34/35 florin to bits. It's such a neo-classic design. Coincidentally, I posted a pic of my own 34-35 today in a competition topic....
