As you might have seen in the grading forum, I have begun with collecting Morgan dollars (and also bought some Peace dollars). Now I want to assemble a complete set, that I can upgrade for maybe prettier or better graded coins over time. Judging from several online sources, dates that where minted in huge numbers are basically worth their silver value plus a little margin. This is especially true for the Peace dollars. So picking up these coins (I mean the common dates) in not ideal conditions just to complete the set should be relatively cheap - so I thought anyway. My experience so far has been, that you can only get the very ugliest examples of Peace dollars for lower than 30€, an none close to their silver value. Morgans are mostly even more. A coin that is halfway good looking (I am not talking about MS) will usually be 40€+, or up to 60€, even from the most common dates. Is this a european thing and the coins can be had for less in the US? Or are the value charts bogus? Or did I look at the wrong ones? If so, could you recommend a reliable one? I tried to link them, but apparently they are forbidden here.
Am I allowed to spell them out if its not a link?

You best bet for seeing reasonable coin values is from auctions. A good starting point would be ebay. Search for the coin you're looking for. When the results show, go to the upper right and select "Advanced". Then select "Sold". Now you can see the prices people actually paid.

Morgan dollars have always had a substantial premium over melt, more so than other common circulated silver coins. And it may depend on how dated your price guides are, since the euro has fallen relative to the dollar over the past several years. But you should be able to get circulated Morgans in the $30 to $40 range.

On the common date Morgan's and Peace dollars the value went up with inflation and the price or silver in 2020. Silver started to decline mid 2021 and has been on a down trend to current. The price of the common date Morgan's and Peace dollars have held their price better than the decrease in silver, so what you are finding is typical of the current market in both Europe and US. There are about 40 common dates for the Morgan's. You can find the Morgan better and key dates, but they will get expensive compared to the common dates.

Thank you, so I guess those value charts were outdated then.

I just looked at some prices I paid pre-pandemic. About 30 dollars for a BU common date Morgan or Peace, approximately twice the silver spot. They're going for approximately twice spot currently so it's about the same.

BU = Lower MS grades, right? 30$ Could you point me to your sources for that?
All I can find is mostly about double that value with some exceptions like Morgan 1921 or Peace 1922/23. But even those are closer to 40€ than 30€.

I just did a price check on ebay for a Morgan 1881 S BU a very common date. An actual BU is selling for around $65. Some listed as BU sold for under $50, but the coin was clearly circulated. BU - Brilliant Uncirculated

ebay sold listings are a good place to start but many people overpay. Usually a true unc Morgan, common date, will run at least 50-60$.

Peace dollars - and to a lesser extend Morgan dollars - are in a massive price bubble right now. I wouldn't buy at the moment if I were you. Let it come down to earth first, then choose your coins wisely.

You think?
In a time of falling silver prices, looming recession and high inflation there is a bubble for historic coins?
I'd never thought that.
