The haxby site is pretty amazing. I'm finding it just a tad difficult to ID the coins though. Anyone else have this problem? Is it easier to I'd by obverse or reverse markers? In this coin I don't see the leaf nine detail on the haxby site.

It's there for leaf 9, but go to ID my coin and use the best markers you have for D/Cs, gaps, and doublings.

The Haxby site pretty much has it all for I.D. of a 1859 large cent coin, but do like Okie said if you have no die cracks doubling of letters or numbers, then look at leaf 2, 7, 9 to help put it in the right group. Some coins take a long time to I.D. posting good pictures helps the forum members help with I.D. of coin

The R in the Victoria is most obvious marker. For a newbie, is that a repunch, die clog or crack? Thanks again.

The R in VICTORIA has a strong die crack. There is also a nice die crack at the I of REGINA. Those two die cracks should make attributing the obverse die pretty easy.

On the reverse there is a break in the vine above leaf two which narrows down the reverse to reverse group G or I. You have two nice reverse die cracks at leaves 6 and 10.

You should always look over both sides of the coin to find the most obvious die cracks first. If there are any obvious cracks, like on your coin, you can probably ID the coin from them alone. If you don't see any obvious die cracks, try to find any obvious re-punched letters on the obverse and try to ID the coin from them. Determining the reverse group (E-P) will narrow down the possibilities. Getting familiar with the vine breaks above leaves 2 and 7 will help with that.

I would recommend reading Dr. Haxby's Introduction to die varieties of 1859's. https://www.vickycents.com/prime.html
With a little use the catalog will get much easier to navigate. Take a look at all of the helps under the drop down menu below "ID my coin"

Hope you enjoy getting to know the 1859's.

Thanks everyone's help. After the feedback and looking closely at the Bicky site, I'm thinking the Onverse is 39a and the reverse is I1. &

Caddis, you are correct on the obverse being 39a and it is a group I reverse. But not I1, because the reverse die cracks don't match. The reverse is I1b. Compare the die cracks from the I1b page in the catalog.
