Hi Folks, New here and back to collection after a long time. I have been looking at Peace dollars 1922. There are graded ones 63 for instance that have bad eye appeal and cost twice as much as a raw B Unc that is half the price and looks far better. Am I missing something? This seems to go also for many coins Liberty nickels and others. Also when buying a coin on ebay, I want to see the very coin I will get. This is not the case on a large percentage of sellers stores on ebay. Many coins of the same grade may look very different from each other. Eye appeal is a personal thing. I am not in coins as investment. Btw. But I want good eye appeal

The Peace dollars, for example, are extremely common in high grades. You can buy them BU for cheap. Slabbed coins tend to sell for a premium, so a BU Peace dollar in a PCGS holder will cost quite a bit more. I personally buy all raw coins, they can be had for a better deal. So, you aren't missing anything. Buy the coin and not the holder. If the coin is ugly, don't buy it.

Am I missing something? The 1922 is a common date with lots of examples to choose from. Often the raw coin will sell for less than the ones in a TPG holder. As the coins increase in price, there is value on a second opinion from a coin in a TPG holder.

When buying a coin online no matter where it is ,the photos that they provide need to be enlarged and sharp . Lessens the chance of purchasing a lemon . As far as Peace dollars ; I never cared about them because of their weak appearance ( in my opinion ) could this be the reason of your finding a choice example ?

IF you look closely there is a link where it says items details.Thats where it will say something like the coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive. Also I never buy a coin where it says 3 or 4 available.Or picture represents condition. You will probably get a lemon and be upset.I say no way and keep looking.

Good luck. As others have said, buy the coin, not the holder. Since you're not in this for an investment, make sure you enjoy whatever you buy.

I am a firm believer in avoiding ebay and most other on line places. I normally only buy at coin shows. If none are available by you, then it is all rather a guess.

I put the entire series together a few years back, 95% from ebay, in raw form with the same criteria. Eye appeal. You just need to read the listing carefully as some dealers/sellers use stock photos or one image when selling multiples of the same year. The toughest part is determining if it was cleaned, which from experience it stands out at the device/lettering edges and/or has light inconsistent hairline scratches. My set looks quite consistent ranging from AU through MS so this is something you could do as well with a little research and judgement.

There are solid deals to be made buying raw coins, but learn to recognize a cleaned coin. The cleaned coins don't get slabbed, and when they are slabbed, they are broken out and sold raw to those who can't recognize a cleaned coin.

So I have now been blocked by two sellers on ebay for simply asking if the coin in the photo is the coin I will receive, which would be a simple yes or no answer. Both sellers have 100% ratings, and both profess to "Ask any questions" if you have them. ebay appears to be a real sewer where coin sales are concerned. Is it against the rules here to post who they are?

ebay is definitely a dog eat dog marketplace. If you have thick skin and knowledge, you will be just fine.

I've asked many questions, advised sellers, and pointed out mistakes on ebay, and was never blocked once. Most sellers are respectful and can take constructive criticism. Sure is strange why you were blocked multiple times, maybe it is the type of seller. I usually contact people who are ill-informed, don't know what coin they have, or post the wrong information. Maybe the people you contacted are hot-headed big shots who think they know everything. Quote: Is it against the rules here to post who they are? I don't think there are any rules that would prevent you from posting seller's names. What is your intention, to personally attack the seller, or simply inform the community on who blocked you? Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.

They were both large ebay coin dealers selling 1,000's a month. I think I may have found a couple of smaller quality dealers. I'm a good customer and would rather have an ongoing relationship with one or two quality dealers. So many of the Peace dollars I've looked at seem very banged up even in higher raw BU state. Appreciate any insight. Looking to get a 1922 through 1925 P. to start.
