look at that metal flow on the reverse!
i compared your coin to others graded at MS64 and MS65 since I believe it would come in at either grade
the coin is not strong enough for a 65. I did however find multiple MS64 coins that have the the flatness on the shoulder we are seeing here as well as light marks in that area. they also have what appears to be wear on the cheek, shoulder and back. I think your coin is MS and I have it at MS64

I could see a grader having a grumpy day feeling the upper jaw bone area having a tad wear and dropping the dreaded AU58. But otherwise, I think this is a worn dies / softer struck specimen and I'd hope to get a 63/64 coming back.

My first impression was MS63 and will add it looks like a miss-matched die pair where the obverse is fresh and the reverse was used, clashed and repaired judging by the lines through EPU.

I'll say MS-64. Beautiful example.

A few light ticks on obverse , not sure about the flatness above the braid . Reverse is a strong strike . MS-64 .

Thanks everyone. I had this between 64 and 65 myself. Since there is a pretty big difference in value between those grades for this date, I was wondering whether I should take a chance at grading it to see if it might snag a 65. If no one thinks it has a chance, I'll probably just leave it raw.

I was thinking the same thing, either 64 or 65. Because the coin doesn't have a sharp strike, then PCGS may have a hard time putting this coin into a 65 holder. I would leave it raw, and would expect PCGS to say MS-64.

Really nice 1916 Buffalo nickel, my first impression is MS-64 and I agree that while the strike is pretty good it might not be strong enough to take it to 65 but close. Really like the mismatched dies and the contrast between the polished fields on the reverse vs the texture of the Die Deterioration. Also the combination of the rougher tools used to abrade the die by the EPU followed by polishing to the left of it. The rougher die marks are something you see more often with the missing 3rd feather examples but I haven't seen many examples of it on the reverse, really nice to see thanks for sharing.

I'm also at a solid MS64, shot at 65. Obverse looks strong enough to pull 65. Luster tends to be a bit more subdued in later die state examples, primarily on the mid-high relief points, which is what I'm seeing on the reverse.
Strike for the 1916 P is typically solid, well struck, this one looks average for the year. Tic marks in the hair above the braid and bisons shoulder are planchet marks not removed by strike, while the horizontal marks on the bisons front left leg just brown said tic marks, look to be post mint.
I'd say a technical MS65, but the reverse luster might hold it back to MS64. Would it get graded on a Monday or Friday?
Nice looking example!
