I have seen a lot of Morgan dollars that have dipped spots and cleaning scratches or old cleanings in slabs. Some examples are 1895-O's,1879-CC's and even 1889-CC's.You can see we're they have been rubbed very clearly. How can this be,do they cut such coins a little slack because they are rare or what do you think.Another example is darkness in the letters and rubbed out white fields. I was thinking of sending in my 1895-O Morgan and taking a chance it doesn't come back details.I can tell it has been messed with a bit in the past. But nice ones are hard to find at a decent price that you would want to own. Am I the only one that has noticed this?

Thinking this is not a very sound business model.

As with any coin, buy on it merits, (or lack of them), and consider the value accordingly. Although in most cases, slab grading and comments can be an excellent guide, (and I seriously consider them), at the end of the day, I still have to make up my own mind. To submit or not to submit to a TPG? - if you don't trust yourself, - them submit, - if you are able to accurately evaluate the merits of a coin (or lack of them), then don't bother to submit.

I buy the coin and don't worry about the grade on the slab. Yes there are lots of dipped coins, it's just a fact of coin collecting.

There are coins in straight graded holders with problems. It is called market acceptable grading. Here is a link to a thread about market grading Morgan's. http://goccf.com/t/422275

Thank you Slider23,this information explains a lot. After being in this Morgan game for some years now you start noticing trends that start forming after looking at thousands of Morgan dollars. You say wait a minute,I know all the key identifiers of a details cleaned coin and this coin should be details but it squeaked by.But why? Thanks all for your responses!

the 95(O) is a rarer coin. id say post photos so CCF can give you some thoughts on whether its worth grading. not every coin needs to be slabbed. in my lifetime of collecting, over 50 years, I've only sent in about a dozen coins.

Panzaldi,it seems the obverse has been messed with sometime in the past and some rubbing has occurred.I was afraid if sent in it would come back details most likely. But then again many slabbed coins don't and they have light cleaning and have been obviously rubbed on.I just looked at a $5000.00++1889-CC on-line for sale yesterday where you could see a rubbed ,cleaning scratched area slabbed,no details. But just looking Ha!Ha! Doing some searching ,reading, learning etc.New Orleans Morgan's are known for very weak strikes especially the beast feathers.

the 95(O) tend to be soft to weak strikes. this one is actually pretty good for being circulated. I dont think the surfaces are original. the question then becomes would they give a passing grade. I think there are just too many scratches on the obv to pass. overall the coin looks be in the AU50 range. PCGS lists this coin in that grade at $1680 if it grades straight. I dont think it will. due its rarity the coin may still have a value in the $1000 range even it details if it can make AU.
your decision is do you want it in possible a detail slab or leave it raw. i think part of the decision is are you going to hold onto it or sell it.
maybe others will chime in whether they would keep it raw or not. I'm not a huge proponent of slabbing.

AU details , looks cleaned , re toned , some scuffing . Still easily saleable as it is somewhat attractive . Will bring around the same raw as it would in a details Holder .

Very likely would come back as AU details, but it might be more easily saleable if graded because it would confirm authenticity.

In the field to the right of the date, it looks like someone tried to remove/rub out graffiti. I agree the coin would most likely come back AU Details as there is too much going on in the obverse field. The example has a really nice reverse.

95-O is AU details, cleaned. Always buy the coin, not the slab.
