Hi. Does anybody know of any auctions out there for lower grade coins, say $1-$100? ebay is obvious but there's so much scamming going on there and very little control. I was looking for a good hosting company something like Heritage Auctions but on the low end. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. I have had very nice experiences with these folks. They have some very nice coins and their prices are very reasonable. Not to mention for error and variety collectors, some great deals!

There may be others, but Teletrade does have lower priced coins. I once bought a bust half in G from Teletrade for $62.
The problem with lower priced coins are the fees. They can make up a good percentage of the final price of the coin. Of course, most people take that into account when bidding. Be sure you know what will be added on if and when you win a coin!

Quote:vermontensiumNo auction sites off hand right now but, this is a cool site for bargains: http://cheapslabs.com/ Thanks for the link, that's a promising name. I'm checking them out. Quote: manilagalleontrade Upon reaching 50 post you can start checking the forum buying and auction section. Yes, that's how I happened on this site to begin with. I did a search for a lower grade flying eagle which I wanted and it linked me to that section. Is there a lot of activity there?

Better to have more choices than less but I'm afraid I have serious issues with these sites when it comes to value measures. For instance, Coinzip has an auction for a bust half ICG-53, common date 1831, slightly uncommon R3 Overton, with no reserve but a starting price of $499.95! That's like double of what it should be. Then the Alaskan Coin Exchange has a PCI-62 1835 CBH listed for $1,275. That price might be fair if it were an NGC slab but if you look at the upper curls on the bust of the PCI, it looks circulated! ( http://www.alaskacoinexchange.com/S...CI-MS62.jpg) I wouldn't go more than $400 or $500 for that piece. Then I checked out Cheapslabs. They have a lot of problem slabs, like cleaned or corroded, which in itself could be acceptable, but, again, I have issues with the valuation. They list a CBH 1836, ICG-50 Cleaned, for $265. One can usually get an NGC-50 for just a little more at other auctions. Cleaned should be under $200. But I'm still glad to have the links to check out. It doesn't mean a good deal can't be had if one searches it out. Just be forewarned nobody's giving anything away. I think I was wrong in the first place. ebay is a good place for the lower end common coins or common conditions, stuff that's not likely to be faked. In fact, I've found literally hundreds of low-priced auctions with many sellers offering very low postage. I orderd a few common IHCs one day, paid by Paypal the same day, and then 2 days later had the coins in my hand. Can't beat that. Still need to be watchful of overgrading and cleaned coins, though.
