I have a 67 set that I found at a flea market and since the SMS are famous for the having absolutely no mint mark my question is this:

Why does my quarter in this set look like it has an "S" like blemish in the exact space that a mint mark would have gone but didn't?

Are there any records to refer to about SMS sets having a potential mint mark by accident and if so where can I find them please and thank you.

I tried my best capture the S like mark for you to see. It is very hard to capture the nuance of this blemish. Hopefully my camera skills with coins will increase with practice.

Spot. Contamination either to planchet or poor handling/packaging.

Good pics.

Bud Dry [beer] had a commercial out several years ago where they famously asked, "Why ask why?"

It is a coincidence, looks to be a surface stain.

Not sure what you mean by "famous for no mint mark" because that is the way all the proof coins were up until that time also (and all Philadelphia coins).

@ raingoddessyume. What I see I can not confirm is SMS or not. Photos in plastic is very hard to take and confuse also. You can open very easy the holder and take photos. This it is one thing.

About your coin. It is Type C, RDV-003, hicks IIIo. If it is Bs (business strike) 1967 it is rare if it is SMS was unconfirmed till now to exist (is believe to be) but must be in some hoard accumulations. Hope you has at a good price.

I want to see also the Observe please.

Here are the obverse photos you requested Silviosi. I took the coin out of the case this time. In the initial photos I just had the coin resting inside the case but the cover was removed when I took the photos. The obverse is extremely mirror like as you will see in one pic where I angled my thumb but not the black frost of a deep cameo Its really hard to photo this coin without some amount of glare I hope these ones will work.

I have watched the YouTube videos of the 3 backs of quarters to look for in that transition time but I thought mine reverse looked closer to a Type A because the ES in states are smooshed closer together than the other two types?

Does PCGS differentiate between the different reverse types?

The reverse photos of this quarter is just the quarter. I removed the lid of the case it was resting in but left the quarter resting inside the case as I took the photos.

Does the milk stain make the coin not worth the expense of grading it then? If I could sell the coin for a good deal of money, I absolutely would in a heartbeat, but I am hesitant to spend 300-500 dollars purchasing a membership to PCGS or ANACS and paying to ship the coin to not see a return on it or at best to break even.

None of the US coins had mintmarks on the 1965-1967 coins.
But all is not lost. When you look at your images, they are improving. I like the third image the best. (not as much light and it allows the coin to look the best.) Like a Glammer Shot.
